The Santiniketan Inspiration Revisited

The Santiniketan Inspiration Revisited

“What is Art? It is the response of man’s creative soul to the call of the Real.” —Rabindranath Tagore

Since the dawn of mankind, men have created artwork out of their senses of creativity. Art is what connects them to the outside world they perceive, and the inside world they pursue. Various art forms have been developed through the ages, from primitive to digital. Though shrouded by ever-changing contours, their essence remains the same: they are but the crystallized forms of expression filtered by the lens of human mind.

Art is more or less a means of communication. Therefore, to state that art serves as a tool to connect people from all walks of life is not an overstatement. Where there is art, there is interconnection. Music and dance, for example, need the performer and the audience as much as poetry needs the poet and the readers. In the same way, a painting, no matter how extravaganza, is simply meaningless without its viewers. To say the least, every type of art has the potential to bring people together.

In the vast world of art, one finds no limitation and no borderline. For this reason, it is of no surprise that in this age of interconnectedness, art also finds its role as a bridge to eliminate the gap between cultures. Yet, it is undeniable that every culture creates artwork in its own context, which is why one subject can be viewed from different perspectives and portrayed in a variety of individual techniques. Hence, the mobility of art throughout the world also means the mobility of cultures, thoughts, and expressions. Although it might be said that people of today are more exposed to global art than ever before, to appreciate it one must open his or her mind to absorb the messages conveyed through each piece of artwork before him or her. Cultural awareness can be of an immense help in this.

Established in the year 1921 by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Visva-Bharati University in the small yet globally recognized town of Santiniketan has always served as such place of cultural linkage, with the mission to educate people in art. Artists flow from every corner of the world to Santiniketan. They come to learn, to share, to exchange, to appreciate, to feel and to look for their inspiration. The environment

The environment created and preserved in this place for nearly a century is a powerful instrument to arouse the creativity from their inner mind.

Rabindranath Tagore’s personal belief that ‘learning in a natural environment is more enjoyable and fruitful’ is proved to be valid, as we can see from the numbers of world-renowned artists who had taken part in this community, whether it is as teachers or learners. For India’s part, the best example would be Master Jogen Chowdhury, a member of Rajya Sabha, India and one of the most eminent painters of modern India whose works are celebrated throughout the world. He joined Santiniketan not as a student but as a professor in painting. As for Thailand, many leading artists graduated from Santiniketan. One of the most memorable would be the late Master Fua Haripitak, a celebrated artist who was rather versatile in techniques and styles, and was recognized as a pioneer in Thailand’s modern art. Also mentionable are renowned artists such as Mr. Alongkorn Lauwatthana, Mr. Tawatchai Somkong and many others. They continue to produce masterful works to serve their ideologies and reflect their worldviews, as well as to be a source of inspiration and legacy for generations to come.

‘The Santiniketan Inspiration Revisited’ compiles some of the best works by leading artists of Visva-Bharati University in form of visual art exhibition. It might be regarded as the continuation of ‘The Santiniketan Inspiration’ in the previous year. As the former exhibition had been very successful and continuously demanded by the visitors for a re-run, we decided to bring it back again but with slight alterations in order that the exhibition would not be too repetitive, while the essence of cosmopolitanism is still fully represented here. It is also noteworthy that this year is very timely for the re-run of this exhibition, as it marks the 70th anniversary of India-Thailand diplomatic relations, the centenary of Chulalongkorn University and the centenary of Tagore’s Nationalism, in which he criticized nationalism and the excess of capitalism.

My heartfelt thanks go to Mr. Tawatchai Somkong, artist and Editor in Chief of Fine Art Magazine for his arrangement for the exhibition and Ms. Hunsa Khamlion, Director, Division of Museums and Art Galleries, for her cooperation with Mr. Tawatchai to make the exhibition a reality. I am also indebted to Office of Art & Culture, Chulalongkorn University for providing the venue as well as the relentless effort for setting up this exhibition.

Last but not least, I believe that ‘The Santiniketan Inspiration Revisited’ will continue to inspire people to keep exploring their world of art as well as interrelations and coexistence with the world around them.
